Common Lift Problems and Repairs: What You Need to Know

With routine maintenance, lifts should continue to operate seamlessly without any interruptions or problems. However, unexpected issues can still arise, requiring lift repairs. In this blog, we explore the most common lift problems and the lift repairs that may be required to fix them.

Lift Doors Sticking

Doors not opening or closing properly can be caused by various issues, including misaligned door tracks, faulty door sensors, worn-out door rollers, or problems with the door operator system. The first thing to check if the door will not open or shut fully is whether any obstructions are blocking the opening. If this is not the case, a lift engineer will need to investigate the issue. The problem could be due to a misalignment that requires adjustment or door sensors that need recalibration.

Power Failure

Power outages, often beyond a premises manager’s control, can cause lift breakdowns. Understandably, passengers might start to panic if they find themselves stuck in a lift. However, most lifts include backup power or manual overrides to ensure passenger safety.

Regulations like EN81-1 and EN81-2 mandate emergency communication systems, allowing trapped lift passengers to call for help. The emergency button connects to an operator via intercom, who will operate the lift remotely or dispatch an emergency lift repair engineer to resolve the issue promptly.

Oil Contamination

Oil contamination occurs when oil leaks into unwanted areas, such as the lift shaft or control panel. Leaks may be the result of faulty valves, damaged seals or worn parts and be accompanied by an unpleasant odour. A lift repair specialist is required to identify the source of the leak and repair or replace the damaged element. This should only be attempted by a competent person as contaminated oil must be dealt with carefully according to strict environmental regulations.

Lift Misalignment

When a lift reaches the correct floor, the bottom of the cabin should line up with the floor outside, ensuring those with reduced mobility can easily enter and exit a lift. Improper levelling can happen for a number of reasons, most commonly an issue with the levelling sensors, misaligned guide rails or worn-out suspension ropes. Lift repairs are required to ensure the lift meets accessibility requirements.

Lift Noises

Any unusual lift noises, like clunking, squealing or vibrations, indicate an issue that should be dealt with sooner rather than later. Loud noises can be caused by a loose or worn-out component that needs fixing or replacing. If these sounds have been identified, you should avoid using the lift until a thorough assessment has been conducted. This will determine the cause of the noise and any necessary repairs or replacements.
